Symptoms of vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
Vitamin B12 and folate perform several important functions in the body, including keeping the nervous system healthy. A deficiency in either of these vitamins can cause a wide range of problems, including: extreme tiredness, lack of energy, pins and needles, sore or red tongue, mouth ulcers, muscle weakness, problems with your vision, problems with memory.
Who is at risk of B12 deficiency?
Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur in one of two ways. Either your diet lacks adequate amounts of it, or your body is unable to fully absorb it from the food you eat. Those at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency include: older adults, crohn’s disease or celiac disease, people on a strict vegan diet, those taking proton pump inhibitors for chronic heartburn.
Causes of vitamin B12 deficiency
Pernicious anaemia is the most common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency in the UK. Pernicious anaemia is an autoimmune condition that affects your stomach. An autoimmune condition means your immune system, the body's natural defence system that protects against illness and infection, attacks your body's healthy cells.
B12 and your diet
Some people can develop a vitamin B12 deficiency as a result of not getting enough vitamin B12 from their diet. A diet that includes meat, fish and dairy products usually provides enough vitamin B12, but people who do not regularly eat these foods can become deficient. People who eat a vegan diet and do not take B12 supplements or eat foods fortified with vitamin B12, are also at risk.

It is recommended that you take a daily vitamin D (colecalciferol) supplement of 400IU throughout pregnancy. This will help you and your baby stay healthy. Vitamin D is a natural part of breast milk. When you take colecalciferol as a supplement or treatment, it passes into your breast milk in low amounts and helps your baby to stay healthy.
Babies up to the age of 1 year need 340IU to 400IU of vitamin D drops a day as a supplement. Unless you're taking very high doses of colecalciferol for long periods, it's still safe to give it to your baby, even though they are getting colecalciferol through breast milk. This ensures they are getting enough.
If your baby is having at least 500ml of formula milk a day, they do not need supplements as formula milk already has vitamin D added.

Why men should take vitamin B12!
Eating a healthy diet helps you get all the vitamin B12 benefits you need, but sometimes, you might also need to take a daily multivitamin.
Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that helps your nerves, blood, and DNA work properly. Your body doesn’t ordinarily produce B12, so you need to get it from your diet every day. Some people are more likely to have low levels of B12, which can cause muscle weakness and tiredness. Taking vitamin B12 benefits your body and can prevent a deficiency.
