Round 1-Britcar Endurance Championship-DoningtonPark

The British Army Sports Car racing team have debuted in style at the Britcar Endurance Championships.

The team entered into the Championship for the first time at Donington Park with their newly-acquired Ginetta G55 Supercup on track.

The drivers consist of SSgt Will Ashmore, LCpl Josh Gilding and Cfn Jon Candler. With a full Army support crew dealing with the pit stops.

After a free practice and official practice session saw the team show their competitive nature, they went into qualifying hoping to make their mark on the standings.

A fastest lap of 1:35.885 left them 12th on the grid and 9th in the GT class, with rivals from CWS and Safeside/Hills Motorsport just ahead on the grid. It was a solid qualifying result, but clearly, the car had more race pace and that showed with a fantastic race performance.

SSgt Will Ashmore started the race, making up four positions within the first lap. Luckily, as after the first lap the race went under safety car as the race leader had spun their car and crashed into the pit entry. They say ‘safety cars breed safety cars’ and it was no different for this event. The race was plagued with accidents and subsequent safety cars which resulted in only 40 minutes of green flag racing in the hour and a half race!

After dealing with a jumbled grid due to all the safety car interventins, the team managed to finish 10th overall, and 5th in class, bagging 19 championship points to take forward. A promising start to the season, however the team is hopeful for a stronger result at Oulton Park in April!
