D3 vs D2
Vit-D is found in two different forms; ergocalciferol (D2) and cholecalciferol (D3), each of which differs slightly in terms of chemical structure. D3 is obtained from animal sources, whereas vitamin D2 is from fungal sources.
Beneficial nutrients
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient available through sun exposure, dietary sources and supplementation. This vitamin plays a key role in many aspects of health, including bone health, immune function and more.
Sources of vitamin D3
D3 is found naturally in several food sources, including fatty fish and fish liver oils. Other animal products like egg yolks, cheese and beef liver also contain a small amount of vitamin D3 in each serving.
Promotes immune function
D3 is essential for immune health and disease prevention. In fact, some research suggests vitamin D deficiency could worsen or increase the incidence of certain autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

It is recommended that you take a daily vitamin D (colecalciferol) supplement of 400IU throughout pregnancy. This will help you and your baby stay healthy. Vitamin D is a natural part of breast milk. When you take colecalciferol as a supplement or treatment, it passes into your breast milk in low amounts and helps your baby to stay healthy.
Babies up to the age of 1 year need 340IU to 400IU of vitamin D drops a day as a supplement. Unless you're taking very high doses of colecalciferol for long periods, it's still safe to give it to your baby, even though they are getting colecalciferol through breast milk. This ensures they are getting enough.
If your baby is having at least 500ml of formula milk a day, they do not need supplements as formula milk already has vitamin D added.

Should you take D3 in the summer?
The answer is yes!
Vitamin D supplements are there to help us during the winter months when our bodies don’t make enough on their own. So do we still need to take vitamin D supplements in summer? Even though we are basking in vitamin D-producing sunlight, it is still extremely important to continue to take vitamin D supplements for your overall health and well-being. Even during the hottest summers, some of us are lacking in the ‘sunshine vitamin’!
D3 capsules vs tablets what's better for you?
Despite everyone's concerns there is no real difference between capsules and tablets when it comes to D3. If you are taking colecalciferol capsules or tablets, swallow them whole with some water. Take them with your main meal of the day. The only real difference you may notice is sizing.
For adults, if you're taking a loading dose for severe vitamin D deficiency you'll usually take it daily or weekly for 6 to 10 weeks. To maintain your vitamin D levels or prevent deficiency you'll usually take colecalciferol long term.
Children with severe vitamin D deficiency usually take a loading dose for 8 to 12 weeks. They may then take a lower, maintenance dose of vitamin D long term.
