D3 vs D2
Vit-D is found in two different forms; ergocalciferol (D2) and cholecalciferol (D3), each of which differs slightly in terms of chemical structure. “Vitamin D3 is obtained from animal sources, whereas vitamin D2 is from fungal sources.
Beneficial nutrients
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient available through sun exposure, dietary sources and supplementation. This vitamin plays a key role in many aspects of health, including bone health, immune function and more.
Sources of vitamin D3
D3 is found naturally in several food sources, including fatty fish and fish liver oils. Other animal products like egg yolks, cheese and beef liver also contain a small amount of vitamin D3 in each serving.
Promotes immune function
D3 is essential for immune health and disease prevention. In fact, some research suggests vitamin D deficiency could worsen or increase the incidence of certain autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

It is recommended that you take a daily vitamin D (colecalciferol) supplement of 400IU throughout pregnancy. This will help you and your baby stay healthy. Vitamin D is a natural part of breast milk. When you take colecalciferol as a supplement or treatment, it passes into your breast milk in low amounts and helps your baby to stay healthy.
Babies up to the age of 1 year need 340IU to 400IU of vitamin D drops a day as a supplement. Unless you're taking very high doses of colecalciferol for long periods, it's still safe to give it to your baby, even though they are getting colecalciferol through breast milk. This ensures they are getting enough.
If your baby is having at least 500ml of formula milk a day, they do not need supplements as formula milk already has vitamin D added.

Vitamin D3, during & after pregnancy!
In pregnancy, vitamin D also helps to develop your baby’s bones. If you have a vitamin D deficiency it can affect the amount of calcium your baby has in their bones. In severe deficiency this can cause a bone deformity called rickets.
After the pregnancy
Women who have had low vitamin D levels during pregnancy are encouraged to continue to take vitamin D supplements after pregnancy to help protect against health problems such as osteoporosis (brittle bones). If you stop taking supplements you should have your level checked from time to time to see if it has stayed in the normal range. Our vitamin D3 test kit is an ideal way to get to no your levels.
Are you at risk of vitamin D deficiency?
Some people will not make enough vitamin D from sunlight because they have very little or no sunshine exposure.
The Department of Health and Social Care recommends that adults and children over 4 take a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D throughout the year if they:
- are not often outdoors – for example, if they're frail or housebound
- are in an institution like a care home
- usually wear clothes that cover up most of their skin when outdoors
