read lessHbA1c is your average glucose (sugar) level for the last two to three months. Our test measures the amount of glucose attached to your haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.
A high HbA1c means that you have too much sugar in your blood. This means that you are more likely to develop diabetes and the associated complications. Therefore, it is important to understand your target levels and the steps you can take to manage them.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions around at home blood tests
HbA1c refers to glycated hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. Glucose in the blood can stick to haemoglobin and irreversibly change it to glycated haemoglobin, or HbA1c.
An HbA1c blood test reveals your average glucose (sugar) level for the last two to three months by measuring the amount of glucose attached to your haemoglobin. A high HbA1c means that you have too much sugar in your blood.
These test results can help diagnose diabetes or pre-diabetes (where your blood sugar is higher than normal but does not meet the threshold for type 2 diabetes). This test can also be used by those with type 2 diabetes to monitor and better manage their levels.
Common symptoms of type 2 diabetes include:
– Fatigue
– Feeling thirsty all the time
– Needing to urinate more than usual, especially at night
– Unexplained weight loss
– Cuts/injuries taking longer to heal
If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, and you are concerned you may have diabetes, you should speak to your doctor. The earlier that diabetes is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome. This can reduce your risk of diabetes complications such as kidney disease, vision problems and nerve damage.
HbA1c test results are given either a percentage or more usually in mmol/mol. These measurements compare glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) to un-glycated haemoglobin (Hb).
An optimal level of HbA1c is between 20-41mmol/mol or 4.0-5.9%. This is determined by recent health studies assessing the impact of HbA1c levels.
Making healthy lifestyle choices can lower y HbA1c levels and reduce your risk of diabetes. This could include improving diet, losing weight if overweight, exercising regularly and cutting down on alcohol/smoking. For those with pre-diabetes, taking these steps may reverse this.
