As the properties of vitamin D and calcium are becoming better understood, we’ve noticed an increased demand for our products from athletes and sports teams. The many benefits of vitamin D3 are slowly becoming more well known, and its involvement in most of the body’s vital processes is now being recognised.
Long hours of training can be very demanding on your muscles, bones and overall energy levels – making it particularly important for those doing high impact, high endurance activities to ensure they monitor their levels of vitamin D and calcium. As we get some of our vitamin D from sunlight, those who have to spend a lot of time training indoors may be at higher risk of not getting enough. Blood test kits are an efficient way to determine your vitamin D levels.
Watch our brand new video with Dr. Nicky Keay, Sports and Dance Endocrinologist, as she walks us through why Vitamin D supplementation is important for everyday life and for those who heavily practice dancing, cycling, cardio and strength training.
Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium, and helps to ensure normal calcium levels in the blood. Almost 99% of your vitamin D supply is used for regulating calcium in the body. This essential mineral also contributes to normal metabolism, which in turn impacts your energy levels – you can’t excel in your chosen sport if you’re feeling lethargic.
The remaining 1% of your vitamin D intake is utilised for strengthening the immune system and maintaining muscle strength. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function, muscle contraction and repair. If you can improve your muscle recovery after you train, this in turn could help your performance as an athlete.
With so many supplements to choose from, how do you know which are the safest to take?
Look for products approved by quality assurance programmes such as Informed Choice and Informed Sports. Informed-Choice and Informed-Sport are QA programs for sports nutrition products, suppliers to the sports nutrition industry, and supplement manufacturing facilities. It is a monitoring program that certifies that a supplement product and/or raw material has been tested for banned substances by LGC’s world-class sports anti-doping laboratory.
Products bearing the Informed Choice or Informed Sports logos will have undergone an extensive procedure carried out by the anti-doping laboratory LGC Sport and Specialised analytical service to ensure that it is free from a wide range of substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Professor Matthew Wyon, PhD, CSCS from Research Centre of Sports Exercise and Performance, Institute of Sport at the University of Wolverhampton states:
“Vitamin D supplementation is not only used for treating patients lacking vitamin D but also proven to be vital for elite athletes and dancers for improvements in muscle performance and subsequent reduction injury”.
For many of you that do not know or haven’t heard of Active Edge or road racing in general here is some insight into the sport. Road racing often involves 60-80 riders competing over 60-150 miles over different types of terrain and places. There is an element of team work within the sport which allows riders to work together and help each other achieve individual goals.
Road racing requires a lot of dedication in terms of time, training and miles on their bikes during all seasonal weather conditions. All riders are required to have a well-balanced, healthy varied diet allowing for maximum performance and recovery. Health Supplements including Vitamin D3 can play an important role in this recovery period.
Alongside supplying the team with Vitamin D3 Informed Sport accredited supplementation for the 2019 season, we will be providing regular feedback from the riders through our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts about their Vitamin D3 journey. We have also been able to supply the Elite team with high performance rider helmets and leCol race kits with our logo printed on. And, you can even spot our logo on their brand-new BMW 3 series team car.
“With racing and training within the UK it is super crucial to maintain our Vitamin D levels to allow for maximum performance, recovery and health. There are also a few health and bone risks due to the nature of cycling – these can be caused by collisions, high stress levels and intense training. These factors mean our bone health is at a constant risk, because of this we will be making sure we use the SunVit-D3 Informed – Sports Accredited supplementation supplied to us throughout our entire season. These supplements will allow us to have maximum recovery, high energy levels, high performance and the reduced risk of any bone or health issues.”
RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) is an often unrecognised disorder that can result in disordered eating, low energy, dehydration and low bone mineral density. This can affect all athletes but the risk is particularly high in competitive athletes due to their rigorous training schedules.
SunVit-D3 has recently sponsored a study into how to identify male cyclists at risk or RED-S and the effects Vitamin D can have for the men with the condition. SunVit-D3 is keen on promoting the benefits of Vitamin D in Sports performance as long hours of training can be very demanding on an athlete’s body, particularly on muscles, bones and overall energy levels. These studies can help provide information to benefit sports performance and help athletes maintain their health during the toughest tests of endurance.
In those cyclists with adequate EA assessed from SEAQ-I, vitamin D concentration was the factor indicative of lumbar spine BMD. Vitamin D is emerging as an important consideration for athletes, for bone health, muscle strength and immune function.” (Oct 2018, Nicky Keay Fitness).

Sunvit-D3 supports One Dance UK’s Healthier Dancer Programme which works to improve the physical and psychological health and wellbeing of dancers.
SunVit-D3 supported research by three of the founding partners of the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science. The research was carried out by the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), University of Wolverhampton and the Jerwood Centre at Birmingham Royal Ballet. In these study dancers who were given 2,000 IU of SunVit-D3® per day demonstrated increases in muscle strength and vertical jump performance. They also had less injuries compared to those who did not take supplements. Read more on the study here.
“Vitamin D is important for bone development and has a wide range of functions. In a deficient state, dancers are at increased risk of bone injuries and this latest research indicates an increased risk of muscle injury, which can be detrimental to their health and their careers”

Consultant in Rheumatology and Sport and Exercise Medicine
“The Royal Ballet Company has a long association with SunVit-D3 who are our preferred supplier of Vitamin D supplementation for the dancers of The Royal Ballet. We undertake autumn and spring blood tests of our dancers to ascertain their Vitamin D levels, then provide SunVit-D3 supplements to take through the winter months. We have seen a significant improvement in Vitamin D levels across the Company over the years and supplementation is now a routine part of the preparation for a dancer to remain fit, strong, and healthy throughout the season.”
