Keep up to date with the latest NHS guidance

You may have noticed that there is now updated guidance from Public Health England as a result of Coronavirus causing a large amount of the population spending their time indoors.

Consider taking 400IU (or 10 micrograms) of vitamin D a day to keep your bones and muscles healthy. This is because you may not be getting enough vitamin D from sunlight if you’re indoors most of the day. There have been some news reports about vitamin D reducing the risk of coronavirus. However, there is currently not enough evidence to support this.

Am I Getting Enough Vitamin D During Covid-19

Maintaining Optimum Vitamin D Levels Throughout Spring You may have recently noticed more coverage in the press, stating that vitamin D could possibly help with symptoms of Covid-19 and to keep your immune system strong. With us all being quarantined in our homes, there is also a chance we could be experiencing a deficiency in vitamin D as we’re only allowed outside for around an hour a day.

Description

Coronavirus update

Consider taking 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day to keep your bones and muscles healthy. This is because you may not be getting enough vitamin D from sunlight if you’re indoors most of the day. There have been some news reports about vitamin D reducing the risk of coronavirus. However, there is currently not enough evidence to support this. Please do not buy more vitamin D than you need.

Who should take vitamin D supplements?

Some groups of the population are at greater risk of not getting enough vitamin D.

The Department of Health recommends that the following people should take daily vitamin D supplements to make sure they get enough:

  • All babies from birth to 1 year old (including breastfed babies and formula-fed babies who have less than 500ml a day of infant formula)
  • All children aged 1 to 4 years old, including adults
  • People who aren’t often exposed to sunlight

Why should we take vitamin D supplements?

Vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia in adults.

The importance of our vitamin D levels

Due to current circumstances it is now vital to keep up to do date with your current vitamin D levels. The reasoning behind this is as follows: Vitamin D is generally considered a feel-good vitamin and supports more than 30 important bodily functions. But since vitamin D is primarily formed by the skin’s direct exposure to sunshine, the vast majority of people are not sufficiently supplied with vitamin D! Additionally, many people have a nutritional condition that prevents them from absorbing and storing vitamin D properly. As we know come into Autumn and then winter our vitamin D levels will be at an all time low due to the lack of direct exposure to sunlight.
